West Laurel, MD–According to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) data, in 2014, the total homeless population in Maryland was 7,856 individuals. While the total homeless population increased to a high of 11,698 individuals in 2009, the number of homeless people has declined in every other year since 2007 (Department of Legislative Services, 2015).
One can guess some of the reasons for the uptick in homeless numbers in 2009 (recession, housing crisis, subsequent foreclosures, etc.), and while positive trends do exist, one wonders are we as a society sympathetic and better yet empathetic to those who are homeless? One local church community in Laurel, Maryland considers themselves in the latter category and the attached story shows just how they set out to prove it.
